Where To Publish My Book?

Where To Publish My Book

“I don’t know where to publish my book” is a common question from aspiring authors.

If you dream of becoming a published author, in today’s publishing landscape you can try to get a publishing deal with a mainstream publisher or you can self-publish.

But should you want to skip trying to negotiate a deal with a traditional publishing company choose a self-publishing platform that suits you.

distribution network

Alongside the Amazon platform is the IngramSpark platform.

Based in Tennessee in the United States IngramSpark was established nearly 50 years ago and is the largest book distributor in the world, serving both physical and online bookstores.

When you publish with IngramSpark you are connected to one of the publishing industry’s largest global book distribution networks. It makes titles available to over 40,000 outlets around the world. These include retailers, libraries, schools, and eCommerce companies including Amazon, Barnes & Noble and others.

Ingram owns the world’s most technologically advanced print-on-demand company. This is Lightning Source, which produces books at multiple facilities across the globe.

Print on Demand (POD)

Print on Demand (POD) is a printing technology. It means that your book is only printed once when it is actually purchased. As soon as a customer buys a book the POD book is printed and shipped to the customer.  There is no need for the author to hold inventory saving them thousands of dollars as a result.

Very simply with IngramSpark, you

  • publish your book on its platform
  • your title is plugged into Ingram’s distribution network
  • The retailer (bookstore, library supplier) orders your book through IngramSpark’s distribution channel.
  • IngramSpark prints physical book orders and ships them to the customer, retailer, or library.
  • Authors receive book royalty payments for each book sold.

In Australia, the books are printed at the IngramSpark facility in Melbourne. With Amazon, the printing facility is in Sydney.

Where To Publish My Book

Book distribution has always been a major stumbling block for self-published authors. With IngramSpark authors get the same access to book distribution channels as major traditional publishers.

If your goal is to get your book into bookstores and libraries you need to go through IngramSpark. This is because IngramSpark’s distribution service allows distributors (like bookstores and retailers) to order your book directly through the IngramSpark publishing platform.

When starting your self-publishing journey do your apprenticeship with Amazon. It’s free and user-friendly. Down the track, however, if you want to develop your career as an author and self-publisher consider using both platforms.

There is a cost with Ingram and it is not as user-friendly as Amazon but if bookstores and libraries are your markets then IngramSpark is your platform.

Good Metadata for Book Sales

Good Metadata for Book Sales

Good metadata for book sales is a strategy that needs to be part of an author’s marketing arsenal. Quality metadata helps the discoverability of your book. This in turn can boost sales.

Incorporating quality metadata into your sales strategy is basic for all successful indie authors.

What is metadata

Metadata is information that describes your book. It includes the title, subtitle, price, publication date, ISBN, author bio, book description, and any other relevant information that readers use to find your book.

Metadata lets librarians and booksellers know which category to place your book and where to shelve it. BISAC codes, for example, explain a book’s genre and help its positioning.

Metadata is information that can be used in many places.

A lot of time and energy might be spent creating good book metadata but once it’s done, you’ll have a great marketing tool that helps customers discover your book.

Metadata, together with relevant keywords and phrases, enables you to write a good author bio and book description. This helps search engines bring attention to your book when users search for relevant words or phrases.

Once you’ve created the metadata store it in its own, dedicated document file. This is a huge time saver. Draw on this metadata when you need it because there are just so many places this data can be used and placed.

Make a record of words and short phrases that you think potential customers might enter into a search engine or website to find you and your book. The more specific the keywords and phrases are, the more likely the person searching for those specific words will be happy to find your book among the search results.

There are different ways for finding keywords. You can do a search on Amazon; you can use the Google Keyword Search tool to help you think of other keywords for your book; there is Publisher Rocket which is another great way.

Book description

Not only should your book descriptions grab the attention of customers, but they should also be informative, compelling, and full of keywords. When a customer comes to your sales page it should lure the customer in to make that buying decision.

Similarly, the author biography, should be succinct and keyword-rich. This author bio and the book description are your opportunities to make an impression, so make sure you’re using the right book metadata and keywords to do it.

Create a dedicated document

Create a dedicated document containing your book’s metadata. Keep this in a safe place and then draw on it when you need to use it to disseminate your book information to all kinds of places:

  • ISBN record
  • Pre-publication data at the National Library
  • Publishing platforms like IngramSpark and Amazon
  • The online retailer where you’re selling direct
  • Website, author page, and book pages
  • Your Amazon Central author page
  • Public Lending Right(PLR) and Educational Lending Right(ELR)
  • Goodreads profile
  • Social media profile pages
  • Online interviews, guest blog posts, and other promotional appearances

This master document with all your book’s metadata is invaluable. As I’ve already mentioned it will save you time; it will provide consistency; and, you will have a resource and information about your book that can be easily retrieved and disseminated.  This exposure will always mean a greater chance of sales.

The New Way To Publish

The New Way To Publish

The average author finds it very tough to secure a deal with a traditional publisher so let me tell you about the new way to publish a book – the alternative way.

My own experience has been very different. I’ve had publishing contracts with a lot of mainstream publishers – the likes of Angus & Robertson, Allen & Unwin, Macmillan Education, Heinemann and others.

Traditional publishers

You hear about the painstaking efforts authors have trying to get a publishing deal and how they struggle to get past the traditional publishing gatekeepers.  You hear about the rejections that an author gets, and the discouragement, after trooping the streets and knocking on the doors of publisher after publisher.

I was one of the lucky ones because publishers approached me, and my partner. We never had to knock on the doors of publishing houses or go through a literary agent.

Why were we successful? It was timing. At the time we had the knowledge and that is what the publishers wanted.

Benefits of traditional publishers

When we got a contract to write a series of books we worked with a team of professionals: editors, designers, and marketers. Our role was to create and write the content. The publishers did the rest.

The publishers took on the financial responsibility for the editing, the designing, the production, and the marketing a collaboration that was often time-consuming. There was a lot of communication that went on to and fro with the publishing professionals.

What I valued most of all was that the publishers took on the distribution of our books to libraries and schools throughout Australia.

Most authors find it very hard to secure a deal with a traditional publisher. Not only that, if you are lucky enough to get a contract, the publishing process can take a long time – many months, if not years –  before the book ever gets into production and into the marketplace.

The author has no control over the publishing process; there is no creative control, and royalties are very low.

A different world

Today, the publishing world is different. Any aspiring author with an internet connection can write. When they have a completed manuscript they can self-publish their book for free or for a very low cost and make it available to a world of readers.

Authors, these days, can enjoy the challenge and freedom of self-publishing and the control they have over the publishing process.

The Print on Demand model (POD) model has released substantial economic barriers to self-publishing of the past.

In essence, today authors create their manuscripts, prepare them for publication, set up a free account on Amazon.com, and then list and publish their books.

Print on Demand has transformed the way an author can publish a book. It’s certainly been a game-changer.

Pathway To Opportunity

Pathway To Opportunity

published author

Self-publishing on Amazon is a great place to start your career as a published author. As a published author you access a pathway to opportunity, advancement, and success.

Special status

The thing about published authors is that they exude a magnetic attraction. In our culture the author of a book is someone special; they have standing, and they enjoy the elevated status of being an author.  They are branded with distinction.

Haven’t you ever noticed the adulation, the respect and the admiration that is heaped on authors?

As a non-fiction author you are recognised as an expert in some form of knowledge; and, as a fiction author you are perceived as gifted and talented – someone who can draw a reader into your web.

Boost credibility

Publishing a non-fiction book boosts your credibility and authority. This in turn can improve your business. You are set apart as the authority in your field.

Celebrity and influencer

Once you are a self-published author not only are you able to share your story with the world, you’re also in a position to gain speaking opportunities and influence others. Opportunity presents itself and you can become a celebrity and influencer.

As a creative entrepreneur this may mean speaking engagements, being part of an international speakers circuit, becoming a media personality, distinguishing yourself as a podcaster, or gaining recognition with a YouTube channel.

What may start as a hobby on Amazon has the potential to escalate into a scalable business, a long term business, or even a publishing empire.

Multiple streams of income

Multiple streams of income

A side hustle started on Amazon can grow into multiple streams of income.

Authors can move beyond the Amazon ecosystem with traditional publishers noticing them and even offering a publishing deal.

There are massive opportunities for additional passive income as you embrace global markets, produce books in multiple formats, create branded series, expand the publishing of your books to other platforms (IngramSpark, Kobo, iBooks), and publishing in multiple genres.

Ebooks and audiobooks continue to grow in popularity. With just one click a Kindle eBook is delivered immediately to a free Kindle app on your computer, your iPad or smartphone.

An audiobook is popular because it allows you to enjoy a book while being engaged in some other activity such as commuting or exercising.

Promote your expertise

As you expand, develop and promote your expertise there is opportunity to become a coach, or a creator of courses.

A how-to book, for instance, might qualify you to be a coach with prospects wanting to sign up to learn from you.

As a book author others quickly acknowledge that you are the expert.

Savvy authors can grow a strong base of online followers that allows them to directly engage with their readers and drive sales via their websites and social media channels.

DIY ecommerce platforms make it easy for authors to create online stores that let readers browse their titles, add to a shopping cart, and pay for their purchases with just a few clicks.

If becoming a published author interests you then do your apprenticeship on the Amazon platform. This is your starting point. From here your can explore other opportunities and who knows where this journey will take you.

Publish a Book for Free?

Publish a Book for Free?

The question as to whether or not you can publish a book for free is often debated. My simple answer is -Yes. It is absolutely possible to publish a book for free.

How do you do it?

We live in amazing times. The internet has transformed the world of publishing. Mainstream publishing houses have been challenged by new concepts such as print-on-demand (POD), electronic books, fast self-publishing, and online distribution and selling.

No longer do authors have to try to find a publisher because they can now self-publish the fast way and profit from publishing their own books. The alternative way of publishing means authors can do it themselves.

  1. Authors create their manuscript
  2. Authors prepare their manuscript for publication
  3. Authors set up a free account on amazon.com with Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)
  4. Authors list their book on KDP and then publish

Preparing a manuscript for publication

Editing the manuscript, formatting it, and designing a cover are the elements of publishing that self-publishers usually have to pay for.

It’s the editing that can be very costly. However, it is possible either to reduce these costs or to do it for no cost.

To edit for no cost then make sure you do an advanced self-edit.

Ask yourself.

  • Have you paid attention to the text’s detail?
  • Are your words precise rather than general?
  • Are you up to date with grammar and language usage?
  • Have you consulted a style manual?
  • Have you refined the manuscript and tried to remove inconsistencies like varied capitalisation and punctuation?
  • Have you avoided clichés?
  • Have you used the same words or sentences on a regular basis?
  • Has the same information been repeated?
  • Is the meaning of a sentence clear?
  • Do you need to delete content to produce a more coherent and complete manuscript?
  • Have you tweaked, polished, and fine-tuned your content?
  • Have you read the manuscript a few times and done a meticulous review?
Self-editing software

When you can get your manuscript to an advanced state and you are happy with it run it through some self-editing software like Grammarly.

Manuscript editing software programs have built-in spelling and grammar checkers. They can clean up mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation; and some even have suggestions for improving your language.

Beta readers

Find other people to read your manuscript. Fresh, unbiased eyes can see mistakes and errors that you have missed.

Set up a system of beta readers. They can read your manuscript, give you their feedback, and identify errors that have slipped through. Independent readers can give you honest feedback about your manuscript.

It’s helpful to have a fresh set of eyes looking at what you have written because you will always miss things when you read the manuscript yourself.

Make connections in the book industry and identify people who can edit books. You may be able to trade editing services with a service that you can provide.

When you publish with Amazon KDP you can format your print or eBook using KDP resources. These are all free.

You have to format and upload two files: a manuscript file, which is the interior of your book including the front matter, body matter, and back matter, and a cover file, which is the outside of your book including the front, back, and spine.

KDP offers free tools, guides and webinars to help you and outlines how to go about formatting your files.

Book cover design

Book covers can be created for free using the KDP Cover Creator or you can build a cover on the free version of Canva.

Outsourcing your book cover design to a graphic designer has become a thing of the past. With the Canva software, you the author, become the graphic designer and you can create a vast array of graphics with unequalled professionalism.

When starting out with Canva register for the free version. This has plenty of uses and things it can do which never fail to disappoint.

KDP on Amazon is a free site that allows you to publish paperbacks, hardcovers and eBooks without paying a single penny.

Even if you use the IngramSpark platform which charges $49 to publish both print and eBooks it is possible to get a promotional code and publish for free.

In conclusion, by mastering how to DIY it is possible to publish your book for free.

Even if you decide that you’d like to outsource the formatting, for example, it is possible to publish your book for a very low cost.

The Dangerous Life of an Author

The Dangerous Life of an Author

With writing, or in fact with any creative pursuit, there is a compulsion – you just have to do it, and this compulsion can lead to the dangerous life of an author.

Occupational health hazard

This raises the question – is writing an occupational health hazard?

When creating a manuscript think about the long hours that are spent hunched over the computer. Then there is the strain on the eyes – staring at a computer screen for hours and hours at a time.

And possibly for some, there is the drinking – those multiple sips of wine. Creativity is often fuelled by alcohol because it may release inhibitions and stimulate the muse.

Then there is the caffeine hit – the endless cups of coffee or the favourite snacks.

Consider the long-term effects on the body of spending all this time at the computer, typing away, looking at the screen, and sipping away.

Working on a manuscript can be obsessive. It may mean never moving away from the computer. You become so involved in the creative pursuit that you don’t even think about what all of this may be doing to your body.

Sedentary lifestyle

The compulsive act of writing leading to long hours of sedentary activity can result in poor posture, eye strain, and repetitive strain injuries to your wrists and fingers.

Finally, when you have thoroughly exhausted yourself you hit the sack, sleep for awhile, and then start all over again.

Unfortunately, the sedentary life of an author can be dangerous.

Chronic health issues

Writing is an occupational health hazard if you are not careful. It can lead to all sorts of unpleasant, chronic health problems ranging from obesity to cardiovascular disease not to mention the dangers of poor posture.

Here are a few tips to avoid falling down the rabbit hole.

Standing desk

Tips for avoiding the dangers

  1. Think about a more ergonomically-conscious workspace.
  2. Reduce the time you spend sitting in front of the computer.  Every 30 minutes get up and move.
  3. Try standing up to work at your computer – invest in a convertible standing desk. Standing may result in health benefits such as lowering the risk of weight gain and obesity, reducing back pain, improving mood and boosting energy levels.
  4. Set a timer so that every 60 or 90 minutes there is a reminder to go for a short walk. Or you may invest in an exercise bike, or do some stretches.
  5. Spending hour after hour staring at the computer screen can result in eyestrain. In addition to working on your computer, you’ll be looking at other digital devices as well – your tablet, smartphone, or smart TV.  Take steps to combat the effects of eyestrain.
  6. Being hunched over the computer for long periods of time may result in bad posture. This in turn can result in neck and back pain, headaches, poor circulation or hand and wrist pain, as well as permanent damage, if not rectified early in the piece.
  7. To combat the adverse effects of the writing lifestyle build regular exercise into your daily life and move your body as often as possible.

Daily exercise

Exercise bike

Daily exercise will boost your energy, keep your weight in control, and help avoid some nasty diseases that occur as a result of inactivity.

When your whole life revolves around your writing aim for a work-lifestyle balance, and become a healthier writer.

Look after your body and make it your number one priority when you are writing.

4 Useful Resources for Authors

4 Useful Resources for Authors

To help writers on their creative book writing and publishing journeys I’m sharing just 4 useful resources for authors. The ones that I’ve chosen I believe to be indispensable and they are tools that I personally use myself.

Fiverr is an outsourcing marketplace. An author needing digital freelance services can get help for publishing a book.  Fiverr provides instant access to a global network of freelancers.

On Fiverr, find specialists who create book covers, do artwork, provide editing services, offer to format, create “sell sheets”, build websites,  perform web development, and much more. It is easy to find freelancers who offer the services you want.

Authors can buy pretty much anything and even find ghostwriters to write their books.

To help an author select a freelancer on Fiverr, there is a seller review system that will assist in helping you decide whether or not a special freelancer is for you.

Canva, which was founded in Australia, is a graphic design platform. With Canva authors can create anything they want: book covers, invitations, flyers, social media posts, logos, illustrations, YouTube thumbnails, Pinterest pins, and illustrations for your book’s interior  – just to mention a few.

It’s an indispensable tool for authors who self-publish. Not only do authors have to create wonderful books they have to do their own marketing as well.

No more do authors have to find a graphic designer. With Canva they can generate a vast array of graphic designs that look very professional.

Tangent Templates

Tangent Templates

Tangent Templates is a software suite designed for authors who want to make low-content books. But its applications apply to other books as well.

Tangent Templates is a template system that comes with lots of tools. For instance, its KDP Helper gives you the perfect cover and interior dimensions with perfectly sized cover templates, clearly laid out to use with tools like Adobe, Powerpoint, Keynote and Canva.

When designing a book cover on Canva the cover helper works out all the exact dimensions with exact pixel sizes for any cover an author chooses to design.

If an author wants to publish a book on Amazon KDP, Tangent Templates helps them create a book and then list it quickly on KDP. Usually, the book will be available for sale on Amazon within 24 hours so that very quickly an aspiring author becomes a published author!

There is no subscription for Tangent Templates so it is available just for a one-off fee.

Publisher Rocket

Publisher Rocket is an amazing piece of book marketing software. It helps authors with their research into keywords and categories when listing their books on Amazon.

This research, if done manually, can take hours and hours but the great advantage of Publisher Rocket is that it speeds up the process.

There are four main tools within Publisher Rocket that help an author with their book listing. The features include

  1. Keyword Search
  2. Competition Analyzer
  3. Category Search
  4. AMS Keyword Search

The keyword research feature, for example, helps an author understand how readers use Amazon and choose the books they buy.

Personally, the benefit that I love is the way Publisher Rocket can assist with market research and with validating an idea. Even before an author starts writing they can research categories to find out which ones would be best to help an author discover a profitable niche and one that is not too competitive.

Publisher Rocket gives me the data that I need to increase my sales and to publish bestselling books.

Publisher Rocket helps an author get the most out of Amazon. It has the power to transform book marketing with just a few searches.

In my effort to be fully transparent some of the links above are affiliate links and I want to emphasise that these are all resources that I use personally in my own publishing journey.

Graphic Design For Authors

Graphic Design For Authors

Graphic design for authors is easy with Canva.

Canva, which was founded in Australia, is an amazing online graphic design tool that you can easily learn to create and design anything you want.

From an author’s point of view, Canva must be one of the most important inventions of our time.

Many authors say that they just want to write.  These days, however, it doesn’t matter whether you publish with a traditional publisher or publish independently, you need to invest as much effort into marketing as you do in actually writing the book.

Authors that self-publish are not only responsible for creating wonderful books but they are responsible for their own marketing.

Creating graphics

As promoters of their books, authors need to be able to create their own graphic images to market on social media. They need to make book covers,  design “sell sheets” or promotional flyers, make social media banners, Youtube thumbnails, or anything that is requiring graphics.

Canva makes creating graphic design easy and it is user-friendly with its drag-and-drop interface, a library of stock images, and an endless array of templates.

Canva graphic

Gone are the days of having to hire a graphic designer. Outsourcing your graphic design work is a thing of the past.

With the Canva software, you the author, become the graphic designer and you can create a vast array of graphics with unequalled professionalism.

Authors can use Canva to create:

  • book covers
  • book launch invitations
  • flyers
  • social media posts
  • logos
  • Illustrations for your book’s interior, and
  • much more.

I love Canva

Personally, I love Canva. With Canva I create my own book covers, my social media posts, and illustrations for my book interiors.  I can have fun creating my own book marketing images which look as if they’ve been done by a true professional.

I’m excited by Canva’s unlimited creative marketing possibilities. For instance, I can take a quote from one of my books, add an image, customise a template, and share it on platforms like Pinterest or other social media platforms.

Being able to create a flyer for my new book by selecting an appropriate template and adding a “buy now” button and putting it on my website or Facebook page is so liberating.

Free version

When starting out with Canva register for the free version. This has plenty of uses and things it can do which never fail to disappoint. Become familiar with the software and then as you become more experienced you may consider upgrading to Canva Pro which is the paid plan.

Canva Pro gives you additional functionality and premium templates and design elements. It takes you to a whole new level of professional design.

Become the professional designer you always dreamed about without having to learn and negotiate complex and expensive editing tools.

What do you think? Are you ready to give Canva a try? If so click the link below.

Speed Up Research

Speed Up Research

Speed up research

Putting together the metadata for your book’s listing on Amazon can be time-consuming but you can speed up research by using special software.

When publishing on Amazon the idea is to enter metadata that will increase the discoverability of your book to get more sales.

Research into categories

Putting together your metadata involves research into categories and keywords. This research can be done manually and is time-consuming.

My personal experience when researching the best ten (10) categories for a book is that it can take hours and hours of time.

But don’t sweat. There is an excellent software tool that can help you speed up research.

This software is called Publisher Rocket, an excellent tool that helps you:

  • save time
  • saves you the frustration of keyword research
  • helps with selecting categories
  • provides data on what customers are typing into the Amazon search bar
  • discover your competitors
  • find best-selling book categories
  • identify profitable keywords for Amazon Ads

What I really love about Publisher Rocket it is the way it can help with research into categories. When listing your book on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) ie. Amazon’s publishing platform you are asked to select two categories.

But did you know that you can actually put your book into 10 categories? You may wonder how you do this when you are only asked to select two.

As soon as your book is published you can contact Amazon and ask them to put your book into 10 categories.

This means doing a lot of research into categories and as I mentioned before it can take hours and hours of research.

Speed up research

With Publisher Rocket you can speed up research.

Market research

Another great benefit is that Publisher Rocket helps with market research and assists with validating your idea. Even before you start writing your book you can research categories to find out which ones would be suitable – categories that could help your book become a best seller. You are able to discover a profitable niche but one that is not too competitive.

Keyword research

In addition, Publisher Rocket helps with keyword research. It helps to discover keywords that customers are typing into the Amazon search bar.

It gives you monthly earnings for books with appropriate keywords, it estimates how many books are competing for a keyword and you can find out low competition keywords that can be allocated to your book. With the competitive score Publisher Rocket tells you whether or not its a good keyword for your book.

So in summary Publisher Rocket helps you to:

  • do research
  • get quick results
  • saves time
  • get ideas
  • validate ideas.

Speed up research

Important note: Publisher Rocket applies to the United States marketplace. It also has the capacity to switch to the UK or German markets. While it does not cater for the Australian marketplace it is an indispensable piece of software. After all, if you promote your book in Australia, at the same time you’ll want to market it in the United States as well.

If you’d like to learn more about Publisher Rocket or would like to purchase the software for a one-off payment (under US$100) press the button below for my affiliate link. This means I do get a commission on any purchases.

What No One Told You

What No One Told You

A new series of books that explores Australia’s hidden past has been released.

Telling the truth about what went on in Australia’s past brings to light the colonial conflict and near dispossession of First Nations people.

Not only what happened to the First Nations people, but the Chinese presence on the goldfields also gave birth to racist, and anti-Chinese sentiment resulting in race-based migration restrictions and the White Australia policy.

Many in Australian society today don’t understand the facts of our history.

It’s only by acknowledging the truth of our past that we can heal the wounds. Only then can we move forward together into a better future.

The series

All five (5) books in the series were written by myself.  The five books in Gold! Hidden Stories of Australia’s Past are:

Truth-telling themes

  • FIND OUT how in the lead-up to the discovery of gold with the trailblazing of the British into Victoria and beyond the lives of First Nations people were irrevocably changed.
  • LEARN about the Chinese presence on the goldfields, and whose migration to Australia gave birth to racist, anti-Chinese sentiment resulting in race-based migration restrictions and the White Australia policy.
  • DISCOVER how Australia became like a whirlpool of molten gold sucking in men and women from all over the world creating a population explosion with diverse communities and religions, different races, and different ideologies.
  • EXPLORE the seeds of the Australian uprising and how the Eureka Stockade on the goldfields in 1854 was a battle inspired by political purpose, a fight for democratic rights that cemented the nature and direction of relationships between citizens and governments in Australia forever.
  • UNCOVER a legendary past of bushrangers, whose memories had to do with their daring exploits, their amazing horsemanship, their ability to survive and hide in the bush, and their challenge to colonial authorities.

The books are available in both paperback and eBook formats – the  Kindle eBook being available on amazon.com.au for a very limited time at a special launch price.

You will also find these books on Barnes & Noble, Booktopia, Book Depository, eBay and other big online retailers.

If you want to find out how to write and publish your own books you may find it useful to be part of my Facebook group: Fast Self-Publishing Online.
